I Dreamed a Dream - Fantine
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

In the  movie adpation of the Hugo's book. There are many songs that show certian religious aspects. For example the song "I dreamed a Dream" . Fantine says that she has dreamt that God would be forgiving for everything that she has done wrong in her life. She says that she has dreamt that God Will Come to her and fix her sins. In this song she talks about how her "childhood" was ripped away from her.  Anne Hathway is the actress that performs this song. Critics siad that she did a marvelous job of portraying the true emotions of Fantine.

In this song Marius is greving over the lost of those that died along the barricade. He doesn't understand why he lived and noone else does. At first this seems like it was a bad thing and that he should have died alongside his friends , however in the end he realizes that him living means that he spends more time with Cosette and that living means that he has more time with her and that they can have a life without worry because he fought on the barricade. It can also be said that the song "Empty Chairs at Empty tables" can be said to be a reference to God. This song is known as a Lament. A Lament is a langague known from the bible. There are palms in the bible that reflect almost the same type of sense that these song lyircs want you to interpet.

Empty Chairs at Empty Tablse - Marius

There's a grief that can't be spoken.

There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone.

Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about tomorrow
And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
And I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On this lonely barricade at dawn.

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.

Phantom faces at the windows.
Phantom shadows on the floor.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.

Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more
